The bottom line to any pneumatic braking system is a good supply of compressed air at up to 10 bar (150 psi) pressure.

The principal components of the supply system are compressors, moisture separators, oil separators, filters and relief valves.

The Knorr-Bremse range covers 2 to 4-cylinder reciprocating air compressors with a delivery of 200 to 3100 l/min and rotary screw air compressors with a delivery of 500 to 5600 l/min -- all designed to match the ratings required for every kind of vehicle from trams to heavy main-line locomotives. The air compressors can be driven by AC or DC electric motors, or by a hydrostatic system if necessary.

Moisture separators remove the moisture that is always present after air has been compressed. It stops the moisture entering the pipes and equipment and causing problems. Maintenance is reduced, there is less rust and the danger of freezing in winter is eliminated.

The task of oil separators and filters is to remove any condensation and oil from the supply of compressed air. Knorr-Bremse has developed special collectors which allow the oil/water mixture to be disposed of without causing pollution.

The treatment of compressed-air supplies in this way makes a major contribution to improving day-to-day reliability.
